A simple source for paint palettes, re-use old dishes. These are especially great for acrylic (or other water based paints) because you may cover the palette (plate) with plastic wrap and slide into the refrigerator for the next session. I found the plastic cover ups work perfect to cover my plate. These come in a box of assorted sizes and look very similar to shower caps (another source for covering paints). Where did I find the cover ups? Dollar Store.

Wax paper - endless possibilities.... I mainly use wax paper to cover slightly wet paintings for easier transport. I also use wax paper in between layering steps of mixed media or altered book pages. The wax paper doesn't stick to the adhesive and allows me to continue working.

Try using Grafix Rubonz and transferring a watercolor. The results are quite nice with a light and translucent appearance. The artwork shown is a watercolor printed on Rubonz and then adhered to a piece of wood. The natural characteristics of the wood peek through the transfer, warming up the composition. The small image is mixed media using a book page, acrylic paint and pressed flowers on a piece of wood. The two panels were then mounted on (using Double Tack adhesive film) a panel covered in burlap that was painted and distressed. The combination of these pieces unite to form a pleasing composition.

This is a great way to use pieces of original art in multiple ways!

With summer winding down and school starting Creative Corner @ Hodgepodge will be featuring Journals beginning September 1st (First Thursday Artwalk). Journaling is such a great way to introduce yourself to mixed media and other forms of art. Why? Because it is all about you and there is no editing!

Let's talk a little about journaling.... first of all journaling is not limited to writing, nope journaling can also be doodling, drawing, painting, pasting etc. See how easy it is to pull in mixed media?

What do you journal about? Well, it can be as simple as defining what color you feel like - and there you go, paint or paste in a color chip and you are journaling! More ideas to journal by:

It has been a crazy summer! The days just seem to fly by (although they are very hot) and I am wrapping up a few big projects. Closure is always slightly bittersweet, satisfaction arrives with each completed project, but remorse can linger around knowing that this creative process is over.

The beauty of creating is just that, you can continue to create. So as I hand these projects over, the thrill of new things to come takes hold. My sketchbook is full with designs for art kits, workshops and new products for the art shop.

The next piece in the Historic Clarksville series will be available August 4th (First Thursday). Remember this series is limited and will not be repeated. As of yesterday, there were only two kits available of Franklin Street. Hurry in Creative Corner @ Hodgepodge and pick one up before they are sold out.

"Button Tree" is the first piece in the tree series. It will also be available on August 4th. This kit will include instructions, pattern, paper and buttons. You provide the 11 x 14 canvas, paint and adhesive (available in Creative Corner). In addition to materials in the kit you may add more embellishments and personal touches. This kit is fun because of the flexibility it offers.

Creative Corner @ Hodgepodge in downtown historic Clarksville, TN is not only an art supply shop but also a place to gather inspiration and creativity. We are offering limited additions of art kits, each kit comes with instructions and the components to complete a piece of mixed media art.

At this time we have the Franklin Street Scene from the Historic Clarksville Series. These are

8 x 10 panels with collage resources included in each kit. You will receive a hand drawn print of Franklin Street, portion of Clarksville map and Clarksville facts. Following a handful of easy instructions you may complete your art in the ease and comfort of your home. There are only about eight of these kits left.... better hurry.

Next month's Historic Clarksville kit with be Public Square. You may ask for to reserve one at Hodgepodge (again there will only be a limited number released). Prepayment is required ($15)

Also in the art shop are four beautiful American Bird series kits. These pieces finish out to about 11 x 14. The kit is comprised of a vintage ledger page (the background), an American bird print and embellishment resources. If you are a nature lover and like to fill your home with original art, these kits are for you. They are reasonably prices and frame out beautifully.

Whew! The art shop is officially open! Thank you everyone for your help and support, especially with my knee limitations. Kendall, Crystal, Jennifer and Patti.... many thanks for helping me carrying things up and downstairs. Becky H. as always thank you for helping me pull it all together at the end. And Paige for her long distance help and support. Jane and her superior food from The Lovin Spoonful....yummy. And of course my family, the quiet little elves who work hard and always support me.

There are so many things I am grateful for, however the basics are never taken for granted, like being able to walk. Unfortunately, I have had a lifetime of knee injuries. I would like to say that it is just one knee due to some interesting sporting event, but this is not the case. Both knees have been a medical mystery for years, dislocating, tearing tendons, ligaments and just plain inflammation for not apparent reason.

So once again I find myself in a position of dependence. I know how fortunate I am to have two daughters that jump in and pick up my life carrying on as if it were nothing. They have been incredible, driving me, feeding me, teaching my classes and taking care of my every need. I feel so humbled to have these two wonderful young women as my daughters.

My extended family that shows up at the hospital and waits with me for hours, thank you. The phone calls and e-communications are so appreciated.

And my dear friends that have also sat with me, talked with me and listened to me. I am truly grateful.

I cannot express my gratitude enough for everyone's help through yet another knee incident.

Workshops and Art Shop

This summer has been such a busy time with teaching mixed media and opening the art shop. Regretfully, things get put aside - such as this blog. But the good news is, things are started to level off. Or perhaps, I will tell myself that and attend to the lovely world of e-communication.

So here we are, a tiny (but heart-filled none the less) new art shop to open in the beautiful historic area of Clarksville. The entrance is on Strawberry Alley or you may shop your way through the fabulous Hodgepodge (off Franklin Street) and enter up the stairs. Please plan to drop by on the night of July 7th (5-8), browse around and let me know what items you would like to see in stock. Creative Corner @ Hodgepodge will offer art supplies and inspiration geared towards the mixed media artist. Don't know what that is? Well come on by and lets talk about. We have mixed media kits that you can take home and create art. Also if you saw my FB post you see that I will be stocking unique ephemera from nationally known artist like Teesha Moore. Yummy! Yummy!

Workshops - love the energy I get from the students! I am currently teaching with CSA at APSU (mixed media) and Watkins College in Nashville (again mixed media). Take a look at some of the nice work the students have created. We have been working with overlaying pattern tissue, found poetry, altered book pages, collage sheets and oh so much more.

The "to do list"

As much as I like to use technology, I still revert to the handwritten "to do list". I have tried inputting information into my phone, ipod, ipad and laptop - but forever seem to go back to my black and white composition notebook, traditional method of handwriting my daily task. The best thing is that I am okay with this traditional habit. Power to traditional methods!

One of the best thing about opening an art store.... the supplies. Yes, they are arriving boxes and boxes, yummy. I am also enjoying the sample packs from manufacturers. If you have taken one of my workshops you know I talk endlessly about two companies in particular; Grafix and their Doubletack Film and Ampersand's Claybord, the ultimate multi-media panel (I didn't coin that phrase it is on their package).

Ampersand also has a product called Stampbord - oh yes this is the most amazing stamping and crafting surface (again I didn't coin that phrase it is on their package). Stampbord comes in different sizes and shape. I like the Stampbord Bags - they offer a variety of shapes and sizes that are great for a magnitude of things. Needless to say, Stampbord products will be available in the art shop (Creative Corner at Hodgepodge)

All Things Good

Zapped by time.... here I am reflecting back on previous months. The winter months were filled with mixed media workshops and snow. Yes, even in the south snow abounds; short winter days were filled with cold temperatures and lots of snow. However in my cozy studio, creativity hummed along. I enjoyed many cups of coffee with my downtown neighbors and friends. We put aside winter's woe and looked ahead at all things good.

Spring teased us along many days with breaks of sunshine and tempting temperatures. Unfortunately she also brought her thrashing rain and tornadoes. But once again, I plowed along and looked at all things good.

And good things are here, my daughter and son-in-law returned to the States after living in the UK for two years. It is wonderful to set eyes on them more frequently and to have them within driving distance. All things are good.

My grandson has finished fifth grade and is moving on to middle school. A big jump in his life and mine. With his elementary school within walking distances of my house, I have had the pleasure of seeing him after school for the past two years. I will miss his young energy, sense of humor and all things good.

The coffee pot isn't the only thing percolating in my downtown studio, me and Paige King at Hodge Podge have partnered to open an art shop, dubiously named Creative Corner at Hodge Podge. Creative Corner will offer art supplies and creative kits. The kits are a new product line from Lime Juice - vintage creativity with a modern twist. Creative Corner will be located in the back of Hodge Podge - street entrance 124 Strawberry Alley. This endeavor is still a work in progress (opening date is tentatively set for mid June) formal announcements and press releases to come... in the meantime we truly appreciate everyone's support and future business. This little project has consumed my days but I know all things are good.

Paint Life Grand has been booked solid and is rolling quietly along. I have throughly enjoyed this slice of my life, meeting new creative people. Last night's paint party was at the home of Joy Roberts, featured artwork was the Roxy. Joy is a dear friend and I always enjoy spending time with her. Spring 2011

When I returned to the art world full fledge a few years ago I made a promise to myself - to balance my time and keep all overwhelming thoughts at bay. This pledge has helped me maintain my dedication to teaching, sharing art and nurturing my own creative soul.

Now as I edge towards the beginnings of spring, I start to hear the "hum" of new projects on the horizon. One of these projects is a collaboration with artist Lisa Bebi (I am just thrilled). Lisa's beautiful art arrived the other day and was met with much gratitude. As soon as I opened the package I immediately knew this collaborative effort was meant to be. Her positive energy and engaging personality was relayed and evident within the art.

What's to come? I will share photos of this collaboration in future blogs while posting the ebb and flow of creativity as it emerges.

So begins my process..... I ponder, look out at the world and think this good, this is very good.

And thank you Lisa for believing in the possibilities.

Book Review - Journal Spilling

During the course of an interview with Rice Freeman Zachary, I mentioned something I had recently read about one's inner critic. The source of my comment was from Diana Trout and her book Journal Spilling. Diana heard the podcast a few days later and contacted me about doing an "exchange" review. She would create a project or two from my book, Collage Playground write about and I would do the same from her book Journal Spilling. I was thrilled and honored. First of all, because I am inspired by Diana's work and secondly I love to see readers create the projects in my book. Yes, weird as it may sound, I relish seeing art projects and inspiration from my book. Please keep that in mind... and send me photos of art you made or sites where I can view them.

I have never meet Diana Trout or spoken to her, but I feel that we are friends; contemporaries in the world of art-making and writing. Diana brings people together through workshops and her book, Journal Spilling. Encouraging them to creatively express their thoughts with journaling.

I first purchased this book last summer and read it cover to cover. I was so thrilled with it’s content and began journaling for the first time in many years. The ease at which Diana takes the reader into the journaling process is liberating. One of her many talents is, that she does this without boundaries or stiffing rules.

But I am getting ahead of myself, let’s start at the beginning. Diana welcomes you like you were old friends, meeting for the millionth time to have a coffee and chat. You feel relaxed and encouraged by her straightforward writing. The layout is just as straightforward, presenting an idea or technique --- inspiring you to take it and run with it!

The book unfolds in a “divide and conquer” manner, breaking down obstacles before becoming an issue. Diana gets you warmed up, gathering your supplies and before you know it you are spilling. I found the exercise on page 12, Time to Spill, a great starting point (photo).

One of my favorite sections is about taming the inner critic. Diana nails this chapter with humor and wit. It is definitely worth reading and helpful in many ways. Her treatment of the inner critic, pushes us to recognize the overpowering effects of negative thoughts. But she doesn’t leave it there, she show us how to create and tame the critic. This information itself is worth buying the book!

Like the general population, I am intimidated by “self portrait” projects, however Diana’s easy instructions made the project fun and enjoyable. (photo)

Diana takes you under her wing throughout the book explaining and demonstrating a range of art techniques. These page filling processes, like watercolor are ideas that stay with you and are helpful to overcome the “white page syndrome”. She explains the benefits of trusting yourself and letting go. Towards the end of book, there is a section on creative aid, so that you are never without quotes, words or ideas. (photo)

Overall this book contains all the necessary elements for journaling. The page layouts are logical and easy to follow. Diana’s writing style is witty and sincere. I will continue to reference the book and highly recommend it for anyone interested in creative self-expression.

Adventures in creativity

As the snow silently drifts down, I am grateful to be warm and busy. I am packing up some art to send to Katie Beswick at Grafix. She will be showing several of my pieces at CHA, Craft and Hobby Association, January 29th - February 1st in California at the LA Convention Center, Booth 2414. If you are not familiar with CHA, it is a craft show for companies involved in the art and crafts industry. I am honor that Grafix is representing my work. Their product line is a mixed media artist dream. Double Tack Mounting Film, this archive double sided adhesive, is fabulous for adhering collage materials to art. I have never been disappointed in its performance or ability.

I also love using adhesive back transparency sheets, they go through the printer easily and adhere without curling or bubbling. This was the product that pulled together project Bandana in my book Collage Playground and also featured in Paint Box 52 Weekly Projects (Tonia Davenport, F + W Media).

Another product that can another layer of detail to your art is Rub-onz Transfer Sheets, this product enables you to make your own rub-on transfers. The three leaves in art piece X Y Z

were made by pressing leaves and then copying (Kodak AIO printer) onto the Rub-onz Transfer Sheets. The process is very simple and the rewards are tremendous.

2010 has brought many wonderful and creative things into my life and I am grateful. "Paint Life Grand" at the Village Deli has proven to be a delightful monthly event. And I am looking forward to meeting more creative and fun people in the months to come. A tentative schedule for 2011 looks something like this:

January 20th - featured art - Big Red Flower

February 17th - featured art - o Be Announced at a later date.

March 10th - featured art - To Be Announced at a later date.

Please mark your calendar for January 6th, (Thursday) 5:00PM-8:00PM for an art show featuring myself and Cyndi McGrail. Cyndi will show a grouping of beautiful watercolors. I will be debuting Project 2020. This project is comprised of 202 four inch by four inch panels created as a collaboration with the future high school graduating class of the year 2020. Resourcing their art to be included in this collaborative endeavor was quite a challenge. The perimeters I set forth in this project, pushed me beyond my comfort zone.

Collaboration was my common denominator with this small body of work. One piece entitled "The Joke Thief" was inspired from a series of postcards from a Scottish man I have never met.

Also in this show is a piece inspired by illustrator Janina Domsenka. Her talents and story took me to a very peaceful place.

Needless to say this show will make you curious if nothing else. So, please plan on attending and let me know your thoughts.

Discussing Project 2020

12 x 24 panels, mixed media, top image is titled "X Y Z" and the bottom image is "Flight". These pieces are going to be featured on Dick Blick Art Supplies online as part of a video demonstration with Grafix Corporation. As you all know, I am a big fan of Grafix products, I use them faithfully in many of my mixed media pieces.

The leaves on "X Y Z" are made by copying a pressed leaf onto Grafix's Rub Onz Transfer Film, hence actually making a rub on sticker of the leaf. I do this on my Kodak AIO printer, the color and clarity are beautiful. The running strip incorporated within each framed section of the leaves were created on Computer Grafix's printable Transparency Film (again with my Kodak AIO). The original copy was a child's homework paper from the 1950's. The fragile handwriting was picked up perfectly on the Grafix's Transparency Film. Even better is the fact that this transparency film is self adhesive!

On to "Flight", using the Computer Grafix's Transparency Film, I drew a butterfly (black sharpies on Dur A Lar paper - another Grafix's product*), copied it onto the Transparency Film and adhered to an acrylic sheet, the kind you would find in the framing section - just sheets in a variety of sizes (you can cut them with an acrylic blade). I then painted a watercolor of the butterfly on watercolor paper - without using any black. Overlaying the acrylic sheet on the watercolor and presto! The butterfly is complete. I used Grafix's Double Tack Mounting Film** to adhere the butterfly and acrylic sheet together and again to add to the background.

The subtle leaves in the background are made from pressed leaves copied onto Grafix's Rub Onz Transfer Film, the transparency of them is just yummy.

*Dura Lar Matte Film - alternative to acetate - translucent, strong, non-tearing polyester film with a frosted coating - draw or trace your pattern with ink or pencil to create stencils or masks or drawings.

**Double Tack - 2 sided mounting film - Archival quality adhesive film: forms a permanent bond between all types of materials. Simply peel-off the backing and apply. Use with art, craft, fabric, photos, wood metal ceramic and paper.

Computer Grafix - laser, Ink Jet, multipurpose Computer-printable transparent plastic films for use in Laser/copiers, Ink jet printers or both. Great for layering, journaling, windown adn shaker boxes, printed photos and more.

Rub-Onz Transfer Film - create high quality rub on transfers. Draw directly on the film or use an original drawing and copier.

True Believer

Creating an art piece for a show is always exciting. True Believer is a mixed media piece, 36 x 48, the collage resources are maps from Edinburgh Scotland, letters from Covent Gardens in London and a school boys homework from the 1940s'. The flower image came from a pressed flower, scanned and enlarged at a printers. The color blocks across the bottom are 2 x 2 squares of Color-aid paper.

Sounds of Silence

I had the pleasure of working with some talented and kind people at my Hobby Lobby classes this past week. We embarked on a project titled Sounds of Silence. This mixed media class was directed at teaching new techniques and skills using Grafix product Double Tack Mounting Film. The project itself is also found in my book Collage Playground.

The participates in these classes were very enjoyable to share time with; they completed a 12 x 16 piece of art. Every one of the pieces and I repeat every one of them were absolutely beautiful. I cannot begin to tell you how pleased I was with the class.

I am so looking forward to the next adventure at Hobby Lobby!

Tuesday I had the opportunity to meet with the Crafters Club in Clarksville TN. They had asked several months ago if I would present a program on my book Collage Playground. I throughly enjoyed the time I spent with this group. It was a fun to share not only the contents of the book, but how it came to fruition.

The month of June flew by as I prepared to leave the country. Viewing my invoices I see that over one hundred canvas were ordered and used in paint workshops. WOW! It has been a joy to teach painting techniques. My book Collage Playground F + W Media, North Light, also made its debut. The response to the book has been exciting. Thank you everyone for sharing your comments with me. It is my hope that everyone gains more insight into the world of mixed media. Art is a catalyst for numerous ideas, emotions and creativity. The video post is from the last couple days, glorious ones in the UK -- Aberdeen Scotland. My oldest daughter, two grandchildren. We are visiting my youngest daughter -- and loving life. Different Similarities - The Ying and Yeng

I am always looking for ways to bring artist into my life, the energy and talent they offer is so rewarding to me. One characteristic of being an artist, is that we like "our time" the isolation of working and creating. The ying of this characteristic is that we also crave interaction of other creative people. My quintessential balance of the ying and yeng are collaboration projects. I enlisted the help of a few phenomenal artist; Lorri Lennox, Perth Austrilia, Colette George, Riddle Oregon and Christina Jackson, Atchison Kansas, to work with me on a project I entitled Different Similarities. In this project I sent them an envelope stuffed with my ephemera, unfinished artwork, sketches etc. The guidelines were simple, create a piece of art that incorporates some or all of my materials. This task was open to their own interpretation, meaning the materials could simply inspire or physically be part of their artwork. They were asked to compare and contrast the title Different Similarities; to look for meaning in their art in conjunction with how they viewed others and (perhaps) how they wanted to be viewed. I asked them to be creative and not to edit ideas or thoughts.

The process of this project was such a joy for me, it allowed me to get a glimpse of three superb artist. Each of them unique and beautiful in extraordinary ways. Lorri was going through a difficult time with the recent death of her mother, however she never wavier from the project and in the end embraced her feelings of loss. Her work is colorful and delightful. The words "Celebrate Life" clearly relay a message.

I have always enjoyed Colette's work, she has the ability to use peripheral materials, candy wrappers, bits of thread and fabric; creating romantic, feminine and endearing art. Her color choices melt in your mouth, while the texture woos you for more.

Good things always lead to more good things. This was definitely the case with Colette. She introduced me to Christina and proposed that she work on the collaboration. How delighted I was to meet and work with Christina. Her first piece appeared on my facebook page and received enthusiastic comments from all my friends. She is a prolific artist, taking my materials and creating intriguing pieces, that captivate your eye as well as your mind. Her work shows a range of talent and diversity. What a magical experience to view her art.

A visit to the dentist and doctor in the same day constitutes some type of reward. Yes, I bribe myself with small (maybe) gifts. On the particular day (I refer to as "medical science day") I dropped in a bookstore to browse. After cruising the art, craft, home improvement and photography isles, I landed in the magazine section... Boy, did I hit the bonaza.

Reading a magazine requires a cup of coffee, so I glided into the bookstores cafe (with my purchased magazines). Settled into a chair with coffee in hand and began reading the May/June issue of Cloth Paper Scissors. As I was flipping through I stumbled on the "now read this" section. I love to see the up and coming books, so I stopped and read. As I was reading I glanced over and saw the cover of my book Collage Playground. My mind reacted quite casually at first and then...I gasped! My book is being advertised, Wow! What a great feeling. Thank you Sarah Reynolds, marketing guru of F + W Media, for making my day (especially on medical science day). Even better the ad was coupled along with Susan Tuttle's Digital Expressions. She is a sweetheart. If you haven't picked up her other book Exhibition 36, you definitely should.

Well enough of my self indulgence for now. The message today; Read art and craft books, have a cup of tea or coffee, enjoy!

Once upon a time, I taught groups, better known as "painting parties". Little did I know at the time that this would one day become actual businesses, Pinot and Picasso, Corks and Canvases etc. "Painting Parties" are fun and a great way to socialize while learning and exploring art. Teaching in this type of setting is rewarding in many ways. I have throughly enjoyed revisiting and revitalizing this particular workshop. My point here is that art is such a great way to bring inspiration and people together. Enjoy creating with friends! Reach out and make art!

Rhythm of the cycle

The greatest amount of energy you'll ever need is the energy to start. The first step is to make a commitment to the goal, not the process. As artist, we have the ability to visualize the art before it is actually complete. Once you have seen your goal, it is easier to gather the energy it takes to begin the process. Does the art have to look exactly like the visualization, no, of course not. That is not what creating is about. It is the entire journey, the beginning, the processing and the final result. Find your rhythm, let your energy meet inertia and begin to make art.

Dangling Participles

I often wonder how many people transition through insecure moments in their day, week or perhaps, even their life. I am not talking about anyone in particular, just pondering the weak spot in the confidence department. I guess we could refer to it as the aneurysm in the flow of life. Similar to the "dangling participle", a point where you shift from being independent to dependent. In a flash, your modifiers become lost, or danglers.

Whether most artist would admit or not, we crave affirmation, the calming of acceptance. One thing I have discovered in the quest to create is that the process of creating itself is acceptance. My statement to everyone is to allow creativity to be a part of your life in one form or another. Live with art, create, cook, sew, embrace the right side of your brain. When you feel unsure, take a deep breath and move forward.

"timekeeper"

While traveling in the UK last month, I had the opportunity to see some fabulous work. One artist in particular caught my eye and her work was the inspiration for this piece.

The work entitled "timekeeper" is made from paper ephemeral I purchased while I was in London, the background is made from an aviators map, paint and embellishments.

Sewing a dress from paper proved to be quite challenging, unlike fabric, the paper would tear easily. To help prevent this I ironed fusible webbing to the back of the paper.

Conflicting Thoughts

As I journey down this lovely path of life, each day I discover more interesting information. Some about other people, some about myself. Life's experiences teach us so many wonderful things, allowing our minds to be comfortable. The process of physical aging is its own entity, the metamorphosis of the body..... Through this transformation I find myself buying more and more products, you know what I mean, vitamins, lotions, creams, whiteners and so on.

Perhaps there is a demand for a retail store designated to service the needs and wants of "baby boomers". A place where we all could go, shop, socialize, reminisce of the "good ole days" when our skin was tight, muscles toned and teeth white.

I recently purchased dental flossers, the individual plastic flossers. I find these easier to use than the dental floss string. It is amazing how many different kinds of flossers are available. The first flossers I bought were great, with the exceptional the very sharp point on the tip. Yes, I poked myself several times, not good. The second brand I bought didn't have the weapon at the tip, however the string was weak and kept breaking. On to the third, haven't try them yet, though I am feeling confident about the strength of the floss. The package endorses "New improved super tuffloss, engineered not to shred or break during use. The same fiber used to make bulletproof vest." Well, I feel better about flossing my teeth, but now I am concerned with the lovely path on the journey of life.....

Plot Your Own Mood Cycle in Art

How you ever notice the times when you are most creative? Have you long for a time to make art only to be frustrated because you are not in mood at that particular time? Think about it, your mind and body are in a cycle, literally.

Understand who you are at different times. Let's try an exercise:

1. Pick up a sketchbook or notebook.

2. Date your daily entries. You only need to spend five minutes on each entry. Don't stress or edit, just do it.

3. Everyday at 10:00 am, write a word or sketch something to relay how you are feeling at that moment. Example, happy, tired, angry, thrilled, excited, neutral, satisfied etc. Sketching? Use color to emphasize your mood, keep the art simple, doodles, gesture drawings, shapes, lines, etc.

4. Repeat step two at least twice more each day, the objective is to have a morning, afternoon and evening entry.

5. Continue this for month. At the end of month, review your sketchbook. What patterns do you see? Look at the art you created over the month and compare it to the entries in the sketchbook. Is there a common denominator?

What days during the month are you most creative? Least? Are you a morning person or nocturnal?

Examine your moods, you know you are in control. Accepting the fact that all people have mood cycles and accepting these fluctuations in people to the point of recognizing your own and other people's patterns-should do much to increase your ability to create, work and live. Try it, if you feel like it, get back to me. I would be most interested in your thoughts.

Ask yourself

Ask yourself, how important is the creative process within your life? Do you crave it? Is it a necessity to survive? What makes you want to create?

As an artist and a woman, I have conflicting feelings. Household responsibilities pull at my brain, relentlessly, demanding my attention in other directions. Were past female artist tortured by these obligations? Did they have to close their creative eye to vacuum the house or dust the furniture. Am I alone in these thoughts or do other artist today have "domestic" issues?

I do know that the arts and crafts women create these days are fabulous. The content and technique prove to be beautiful and moving. I admire each creative moment that women give to the world of arts and craft. Through this admiration I have labeled this period in our lives as the "Domestic Art Movement". Let's talk about this movement, leave your comments on my blog. Tell me who you are and why you create art. What conflicts fall on to your path to creativity? How do you deal with these conflicts?

Five Step Collage

As I look at other artist work, I am often overwhelmed by their process. I try to dissect the techniques that they used to create their art. You see, I am a person that can only tell you the time once I know how to build the clock.

Once I started to "break things down" I realized that the technique of collage does not have to be complicated. This revelation lead me to originate "Collage Elements". What the heck are "Collage Elements", well these are the components that used to make mixed media art. Interested? Good! Go get your materials, you will need:

12" x 12" Card stock - solid color

Pack of double tack mounting film - available through Grafix and Hobby Lobby

10" x 10" paper with texture or print

5" x 5" book page

Image from magazine, book or your art

Optional: Colored pencils, markers, paints, general art supplies to alter the surface.

Five Step Collage: Support, Background, Middle Ground, Foreground, Embellishments

We will start with the basics, the support, this is the paper, canvas, board or whatever you choose to use to support your art. Let's use a 12" x 12" piece of card stock. Easy to find, available in scrapbook section of Hobby Lobby, Michaels or other craft stores.

Preparation: Apply double tack mounting film (available through Grafix) to each element. Leave the backing on the double tack until you are ready to adhere it. For cutting smaller size images and details, I recommend that you apply the double tack to a larger imager and than cut it down.

Background: Next select a background sheet, cut it in a square or rectangle, 8" x 10" or 10" x 10" apply double tack mounting film to the back, and adhered it to the support.

Middle ground: This is the element that will support your foreground, so select something that compliments the background and brings the foreground to its' fullest potential. This principle is known as "unity" or "harmony". Using different elements to compliment one another, creating a feeling of one, so that the elements relate to one another. This can be a book page or torn paper.

Foreground: Oh the "spotlight" of your art, select an image and place it on the middle ground. The placement of the image is important, centering something is too obvious, push your creativity and see how to position your foreground.

Embellishments: These are the elements that make the art "balance". Take a look at your piece, do you think that you should add some outlines, or color to an area? Do it! You are the artist, and your intuition is the key to the entire piece.

Viola! You have completed a collage!

What about those "Collage Elements" stuff like collage sheets, flower pressed pages, altered book pages, transparencies and more.....Well now they are all included in my upcoming book, "Collage Playground", North Light Books, with many, many more beautiful projects to create. And best of all, inspiration for you to make art!

The Perfect Solution

I am always looking for a product that is effective in my collage work. Making decisions about which adhesive is best for the work is always a forethought. There are many things to consider when you are working through a collage piece. Will the adhesive affect the quality of the image, ink run, paper bubble, or tear? The one product that I have worked will that never let me down is Grafix, Double Tack Film. I mentioned it in previous blogs and artwork instructions. I have found that I love using pressed flowers in my artwork. Of course the problem with this is the application of the flower and its' longevity. The solution that has worked best for me is making a color copy of the flowers on vellum paper. This creates not only beautiful imagery but also gives the flowers a unique appearance. After you have made a color copy, apply double tack film to the back of the paper, cut out and adhere to your collage. The flowers look real, in fact, I am often asked if they are actual flowers.

This piece titled "hummingbird" was originated from a quilt design. Using the grid design of the quilt square, I cut shapes from a vintage magazine. The background is a color copy of a piece of green fabric, the bands down the side are hand written vintage pages. The adhesive used was double tack mounting film from Grafix products. The entire piece is about 8" x 8".

Kindness

We attempted to park our cars in the same space, no problem, she was there first. As I walked into the store, so did she, she held the door for me, I got her a shopping cart, we went our separate ways....until, she asked my advice on a paint color, I asked her what she wanted to express, she said "kindness". We chatted a while and then went our separate ways....until, we were leaving. We walked out of the store together discussing art, weather, and the beauty of the day. She got in her car and left, I did the same.

We were connected with mutual kindness, it's out there and its good.

Diversion

Are we all guilty of diversion? Do you know what I am referring too? An example, (hypothetically) you need to do a task, pay bills, do launder, wash the car, any small everyday chore. However, you choose to sweep the floor, clean out a random closet or give the cat a bath, well maybe not give the "cat" a bath, but you know what I mean. Your mind diverts in a million different directions, avoiding the task at hand. Why? Do you pre-empt your decisions with other decisions, "before I can do this I need to......"

My blog has been my "road not taken". Excuse? Well, I wanted load more photos of art. But my camera battery is dead, the card is full, which means a trip to the store, so I might as well do a little shopping while I'm out.... Again diversion. My solution, I am going to embrace my blog, love my blog, become one with my blog.

Diversion? I'll keep some on reserve for future use, you feel free to do the same.

Creating my collages in the past weeks has been learning experience. I embrace the powerful drive that overcomes my mind to create art. I understand more and more how one can indulge into art and creation. I am reminded of a verse from a poem by Alice Walker; a woman is wilderness unbounded, holding the future between each breath, walking the earth, only because she is free, and not creepervine or tree, Nor even honeysuckle or bee.

Right now, I am processing many thoughts about my work, and what a great opportunity to have. Working through, the good, the bad and the ugly, I feel that I too am holding the future between each breath.

A bike ride, on a mildly cool January afternoon, the sun warming my skin, my breath deep and cold brought clarity to my day. Along with that a sense of calm, thoughts that had occupied my mind early in the morning, soothed over.

I must praise a writer, there came point when reading his novel was not so much what happening with the story, but the euphony of his language. The book, "Now You See Him" by Eli Gottlieb was constructed with beautiful prose. I have much admiration for his abilities as a writer.

Trying new types of collage techniques, well, actually I have been working on these pieces for a couple of weeks now. Today, however, things came together. Isn't it wonderful when everything is aligned perfectly and art is created.

Beginning

The end of the year brings the anticipation of a new beginning. It is thrilling to look to the future and contemplate what will come.

My art has been neglected (in a sense) due to the holidays, I must say I missed it daily. The creative time and living in my head are a vital part of my being however, I was able to (sneak away) find some very interesting materials for future art. Now that it is time to begin with a new year, new art and new book project, I feel comfort. The knowledge that art awaits its' conception is all I need to leave behind the events of 2008 and move into the days to come.

Inspiration, Do you look for it or does it find you? Let me know how it comes into your life.

Time has slipped through my fingers as I look at the last posting, November 22nd. The days have been full, preparing for the holidays. Our traditional Thanksgiving at the beach (Gulf Shores, Al.) was wonderful, beautiful weather, a lot of laughter and good food. I truly enjoy every minute, my favorite thing to do is play on the beach with my grandchildren. These are memories I will cherish forever.

December has brought its' swirl of activities. I have been able to slip in some art among all the craziness. I found several vintage books and printed pieces. These will be incorporated into a new collage technique I have been developing. More to come on that later....

Visited the Frist Art Museum in Nashville to see the Kodak Show. This was a well designed exhibit, with beautiful images.

My mind is full of art to create and many new processes to try. Now is the time.

WOW! I just received the most incredible news....... My book proposal to Northlight Publishing has been accepted! Yes! I will be writing an art book! This is a dream come true for me. I am eternally grateful to Tonia Davenport at Northlight for working with me and nurturing the proposal. Mind Chatter...... lots of good things have resulted from this train of thoughts. The moon and the stars have been in alignment for the creative process. I finished reading "The White Tiger" by Aravind Adiga, insightful reading on the social order of India and the caste system. An allegory of the ways of the world to come. This book along with Lisa See's "Peony In Love" set in motion a different perspective in the approach of my work. There is never an end to the beauty that words can bring.

Details from "Mind Chatter" a collage piece created with low relief. Selected images are elevated from the background giving the overall look more dimension. The full size of this piece is 36" x 24". I used images from my children's art, vintage books, along with stencils, spray paint, graffiti, paint, and pastels. The full piece is eye-catching and engages the viewer immediately.

Mind chatter is a phrase my friends and I use to express the numerous thoughts that race through our minds.

It is always great to resolve underlying issues. I received an email from "artistvo" offering to "kiss and make-up" on the etsy sites. This was wonderful news and I gladly accepted the olive branch. Understanding..... is a good thing.

Finished this collage, and now I am excited to continue with more in a series. The images from this piece were taken from vintage "Popular Science" magazines that my son-in-law gave me. The stories, photos, line-drawings etc are amazing. I relish each page with great anticipation of what is to come. Look closely at the art and see the airplane, instrument panels, clocks, graphs and finally the wings. Reading found poetry written by Annie Dillard has been inspirational, the poems are crazy, funny and beautiful. Especially the section taken from medical books. The information in this format takes on an entirely different meaning. Another way to look at life......

Wham! My friend Becky H. was cleaning out her attic and gave me these incredible wood frames that were used in "lost wax process". They are extraordinary! Distressed burnt edges, some have hardward, others are hinged together. Of course, I was so excited about creating the "perfect" piece, hence I kept editing myself. Finally, I relaxed and the first result is quiet pleasing. Today, I am connecting with my right brain, creating more art and reading Annie Dillard's book of found poetry --- life is good.

Understanding

I am amazed throughout my life I am continuing to learn the good, the bad and ugly. Recently I was involved in a transaction on an esty site. I had tried to purchased a piece of art from artist Victoria O'Neill, site "artistvo". There was an amount difference on the site listing and what the final charges were posted, I was trying to work with the artist and resolve the issue so that I could make the final purchase. Unfortunately Ms O'Neill ran out of patience and decide to post negative comments on my esty site. When I addressed this comment to Ms O'Neill, she told me it wasn't worth the hassle and she had no control over the shipping cost. Which brings me back to the topic of this post, understanding. Why is it necessary to become a person that wants to evolve negative energy and not positive? The beauty of art is in sharing, reflecting and mostly understanding.

Seeking advice from my youngest daughter, she gave me words to live by, "Let it go, she (Ms O'Neill) has other issues and you are better off leaving this alone. I agreed, and have promised to treat others as I want to be treated.

Now that this negative aura has left my space, I am ready to bounce back and create some great art. Everyone please remember to be understanding.

"Sign the painting on my upper lip so your name will always be my mustache" a line from the poem Instruction To The Artist, by Billy Collins. Visualizing this always makes me laugh out loud. Reading Billy Collins' poetry inspires me to make art. And for this, I thank him.

Participation in life today included voting, having lunch with a friend and going to the Post Office. The early voting process was energizing, the excitement of voters casting their votes in this historic election. My voting commission has appointed me to help count votes on election day. This is really going to interesting. One, two, three, four............

I worked on a weaving technique for collage art yesterday. Tonight I will be continuing on with this process to complete a piece.

Ritz crackers, peanut butter and coffee the staples of my diet.

Collected some interesting ephemera yesterday while I was out exploring the great outdoors. Curious to see how these pieces come to fruition.

While doing some work on a project, my mind wondered off; what if people had their own table of contents or index, where you could read whether or not you connected with them. Would this be helpful or harmful. Perhaps, some would spend a lot of time editing and updating their information, while others didn't. I am visualizing this concept as a collage now, hmmm.

And here lies the paradox...... There are many times that my work is a reflection of my sub-conscious. Can a mind sleep while the body is awake? Or can the mind be intellectually awake while the biographical body is asleep? Putting together collage pieces has help me to see what lies in my mind.

I had insightful exchange of emails with Jonathan Talbot author of "Collage A New Approach" about defining art and in particular the defining of "conceptual art". I feel I now have a true understanding of what my art is about and who I am as a artist.

Well, now that we have pondered world peace and such serious matters, let's (especially me) move on to making art, enjoying life and having fun!

Listening to Urlsa Helgi's book "The Worst Thing We've Done", I was surprised that the main character was a collage artist. It made me wonder, why the author had selected this occupation, how she visualized this element as part of the story, etc. Currently reading, "Divisadero" by Maichael Ondaatje, where in the first chapter he says, "Everything is collage, even genetics, everything biographical is collage, it is the hidden presence of everyone in us, even if we cannot see them, it is in the layers. I love that statement!

Defining my work when asked what kind of art I do, has prompted me to dive into the understanding of conceptual art. This direction has taken on an entire life of its own. I have had pleasure of corresponding with Jonathan Tabot as to his response to the idea of conceptual art.

The puzzlement of two words, conceptual and intention, leaves me with lots to ponder today.

Following up the research I started on Friday... WOW! Found some great information on collage art and recently published books. What I don't currently own, was available via library and friends. My brain has been buzzing with thoughts and mind chatter. Once the buzzing settles down I will begin writing. My heart races with anticipation, new things to learn, read and write.

Art on my "seven" series is humming along, good direction. Checked out a collage artist that published years ago, brain lapse, I will continue on that thought tomorrow.

I am doing some research on collage art and different approaches to the medium. The anticipation of research is always exciting. Starting at the public library, where I owe some money for overdue audiobooks (always). Finished listening to "The Gravediggers Daughter" by Joyce Carol Oates and "Songs without words" the author's name has escaped me. Continuing to work on two pieces of art, going very well.

I have been working on a new series of collage, that I am referring to as "seven symbols". This series is based on the days of week. I have been contemplating this series for long tome. I have spent a great amount of time researching the days of the week and have been engrossed in the results. Today I started a piece on the week day Saturday.
